In response to media reports that Priti Patel is proposing sending asylum seekers abroad to process their claims, Minnie Rahman, Campaigns Director at the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, said:

"The UK has had a firm commitment to the refugee convention since it was created and Priti Patel now intends to turn back the clock and tear it up. This is a half-baked proposal which will only create a more dangerous and more unworkable asylum system, leaving refugees in limbo.

If the Home Office was serious about providing safety for people fleeing war, conflict and persecution, they would take practical steps which are based on reality and stop using asylum-seekers as political football."
