Who We Are

For more than half a century, JCWI has been challenging laws and policies that lead to discrimination, destitution, and the denial of rights and we've consistently been one of the leading voices for a fair, compassionate immigration system that works for everyone.

We provide award-winning legal aid representation to the people who need it most, focusing on representing the most marginalised migrants with specialisms in working with those facing immigration detention and deportation.

The need for our work and our campaigning voice is greater than ever as we continue to respond to the rising tide of racism and hostility that is being driven by today's political agenda.

About the Executive Director role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced charity senior leader. Reporting to the Chair of the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director will lead JCWI's high-performing team, working with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Board of Trustees to provide strategic vision and leadership to the operation and development of the organisation and its vital work. The Executive Director will ensure that JCWI delivers on its commitments to people who move through the immigration system, represents the needs of our clients and the communities we support, works in close coalition with partners to influence public policy and campaigning on the UK's immigration system, and that the charity operates in compliance with all its legal obligations.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for someone with extensive experience in charity leadership and has a sound grasp of the key issues JCWI works on and the political climate in which the organisation operates.

To succeed in the role, you will need to have:

  • Substantial experience as a senior leader and people manager in the voluntary sector or in campaigning organisations, in either a paid or volunteer capacity
  • Experience in developing strategic business plans and successfully delivering them in a fast-moving environment
  • Experience in the management of all aspects of charity operations
  • Experience, or understanding, of the UK immigration system and/or of racial oppression and/or of working meaningfully with marginalised and oppressed communities
  • Experience in charity governance, and working with a board of trustees including a solid understanding of the principles and practice of charity risk management and safeguarding
  • Experience in effective campaigning, advocacy, lobbying and influencing decision-makers, and cultivating support
  • Experience acting as a spokesperson and representative for an organisation at a senior level, with partners and stakeholders including parliamentarians, government officials, donors and funders, in public forums and/or the media
  • A commitment to anti-oppressive values and practices, including anti-racism and inclusion of gender diversity and social justice
